The Funding Model That Answers Buffett and Musk

Why the next era of community investment will fund shared AI systems that build measurable capacity.

We call the framework R3: AI readiness, responsibility, and resiliency.

Warren Buffett and Elon Musk sit at opposite ends of the philanthropy debate. Buffett wants his fortune spent now, on current needs, with nothing left to endowments, and this year he moved to give it all away by 2034. His son Howard calls philanthropy the risk capital of the world. Musk takes the other side. He has said that giving money away well is very hard, that funding real good is harder than funding its appearance, and that he would rather keep his capital within his companies. Strip away the personalities, and both are circling the same question. Can philanthropic money be trusted to produce a measurable result? For most community investments, the honest answer has been no.

Does Your State Own Its Rural Health, or Just Rent It? The Case for AI Sovereignty

In early July, the CEO of Palantir sat in a CNBC studio and grew agitated enough that the anchor paused to tell him he sounded angry. Alex Karp had come to discuss a partnership with Nvidia. What he delivered instead was closer to a sermon. The serious customers, he argued, want to own it all, the compute, the models, the data, the edge, rather than rent their future from anyone.

HubSpot Views vs. Segments: When to Use Which?

The quick answer: Use a Segment (List) when the filtered group needs to be used elsewhere in HubSpot, like an email send, a workflow, or a report. Use a View when you just need to look at a set of records with your own custom columns, without changing what anyone else on your team sees.

We work almost exclusively with nonprofits, government agencies, and mission-driven organizations. So we get asked this question constantly: "Is HubSpot actually built for us?"

How Nonprofits Can Use HubSpot to Manage Grants, Programs, and Compliance Tracking

The Problem Grants and Programs Are Hiding In Spreadsheets

Ask a grants manager where their program data lives and the answer is almost always the same: a combination of spreadsheets, shared drives, and email threads. Grant deadlines tracked in a calendar. Reporting requirements in a Word document. Program outcomes in a separate database that doesn't connect to anything else. Compliance documentation stored in a folder that only one person knows how to navigate.

How to Fix Your Nonprofit's Broken Donor Journey

In theory, a donor journey moves someone from first awareness to first gift to loyal supporter to major donor. In practice, most nonprofits have something closer to: someone donates, gets a tax receipt, receives the same newsletter as everyone else, and either gives again or doesn't — with no systematic effort to influence which outcome happens.

The Case for Automation When Your Team Is Already Stretched

Most nonprofit communications teams are running lean. One or two people are responsible for the email newsletter, the donation acknowledgments, the event follow-ups, the volunteer coordination, and the annual fund campaign — often all at the same time. In that environment, consistency is a casualty. The donor who gives on a Tuesday morning during a busy week gets a different experience than the donor who gives on a slow Thursday.

How Small Nonprofits Can Get Started with HubSpot Without Blowing Their Budget

The Cost Question Everyone Has

The first question most small nonprofits ask about HubSpot is: can we afford it? The honest answer is that HubSpot's list price is designed for commercial organizations, and it doesn't account for the reality of a $100,000 annual budget and a two-person communications team. What most organizations don't know is that the nonprofit pricing landscape looks significantly different when you factor in TechSoup discounts and nonprofit-specific HubSpot licensing.

The Nonprofit Tech Stack: How HubSpot Connects Your Tools and Eliminates the Gaps

The Average Nonprofit Tech Stack Has a Fragmentation Problem

A typical mid-size nonprofit is running somewhere between eight and fifteen software tools. There's a donor management system, an email platform, a website CMS, an event registration tool, an accounting system, a volunteer platform, a project management tool, a survey platform, and probably a few more that got added over the years to solve specific problems. Each tool does its job. None of them talk to each other.

Why Nonprofits Are Leaving Their Donor Database Behind (And What to Do Instead)

The Tools That Got You Here Won't Get You There

Most nonprofits didn't choose their current donor database so much as inherit it. Bloomerang gets adopted because it's nonprofit-specific. Salesforce NPSP gets deployed because a board member donated the licenses. DonorPerfect sticks around because no one has time to replace it. And so the organization grows, but the technology stays put.
